Ronaldo Inspires Al-Nassr’s Perfect Run in the Asian Champions League
With a stunning double, Cristiano Ronaldo once again proved his mettle, and Al-Nassr maintained their unbeaten record in the Asian Champions League. With a thrilling 4-3 victory over Al Duhail of Qatar on Tuesday in Riyadh, the Saudi Pro League team extended their winning run to three games in Group E and picked up nine points.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid player, Ronaldo, was a major factor in his team’s triumph. He set up Anderson Talisca for Al-Nassr’s first goal in the 25th minute. They were further strengthened when Sadio Mane reached the back of the goal shortly after. However, the real show began in the 61st minute when Ronaldo scored a long-range goal to give Al-Nassr a dominating three-goal advantage.
Al Duhail, though, was not prepared to give up. Almoez Ali and Ismaeel Mohammad coordinated a resurgence that reduced the difference. Ronaldo saved the day once more, restoring his team’s two-goal lead in the 81st minute with a stunning volley. With five minutes remaining, Michael Olunga scored Al Duhail’s third goal, keeping the game close.
With this spectacular win, Al-Nassr shot up to three points in Group E, ahead of Persepolis of Iran. Saeid Sadeghi scored twice to help Persepolis defeat FC Istiklol of Tajikistan 2-0, giving them a five-point lead in the group. Al Duhail and Istiklol, however, are trailing behind and have only one point apiece.
Al-Ain maintained their hegemonic on-field performance in Group A. Alfred Schreuder’s team defeated Al-Fayha, a Saudi team, 4-1 to keep their perfect record intact. Kouame Kouaido scored the first goal, while Kaku, a Paraguayan, added two more. In the last minute, Soufiane Rahimi completed the victory, but Nawaf Al Harthi gave Al-Fayha a consolation goal.
Al-Ain, based in the United Arab Emirates, took the lead in the 36th minute thanks to a well-placed header by Kouaido. Just before halftime, Kaku added to their lead with an easy finish. Al-Fayha’s Al Harthi pulled one back, but Rahimi’s outstanding play set up Al-Ain’s late fourth goal.
With this win, Al-Ain jumped to nine points from three games, comfortably leading Al-Fayha, Pakhtakor of Uzbekistan, and Ahal by six points.
In the meantime, Pakhtakor defeated the Turkmenistan-based team 3-0 in Tashkent to earn their first victory of the season. Azizbek Turgunboyev, who scored twice after Hojimat Erkinov gave the Uzbeks the lead, was key.
Only the ten group winners will move on to the final sixteen in this competition. The top three finishers from the eastern and western portions of the draw will join them.
Al-Nassr and Al-Ain appear to be serious candidates for the coveted crown as the Asian Champions League progresses, with Cristiano Ronaldo’s skill at the center of Al-Nassr’s remarkable run.
