“San Francisco 49ers Trade Quarterback Trey Lance to Dallas Cowboys in Exchange for a Fourth-Round Pick”
According to a report from NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Friday, the San Francisco 49ers are moving, sending quarterback Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys.
According to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero, the 49ers will receive a fourth-round pick in the 2024 draft in exchange for Lance.
The 49ers made a significant investment on Lance prior to this deal, moving up in the draft to select him with the third overall pick in 2021 utilizing three first-round picks. Sam Darnold won the competition for the backup quarterback position, but the organization recently revealed that Lance would be their third-string quarterback, behind Brock Purdy and Darnold.

49ers general manager John Lynch voiced his feelings during the broadcast of San Francisco’s preseason game, stating, “Really hard day, such a lovely young kid. We tried something, but it didn’t work out. Ours is that. We accept responsibility for it. But as I believe you all to believe, his narrative is still mostly untold. For Trey, I’m thrilled. They pursued him, but Dallas stepped up and genuinely wanted him. And I believe it will be a terrific place for him to land. No one should be surprised that it didn’t succeed; Trey and we both put a lot of effort into it. He fought through injuries as a result of unforeseen circumstances, but this team is prepared to succeed. We enjoy our quarterback’s room. We like Sam Darnold, Brandon Allen, and Brock Purdy all very much. We thus wish Trey the best of luck in Dallas. We will always be concerned about that young man and be inspired by his character and hard ethic.

Kyle Shanahan, the head coach, adding that he continued to have faith in Lance’s ability to succeed, whether it be with the 49ers or another group in the future.
According to NFL Research, Lance played in eight games during his two years with the 49ers, which is the fewest games played by a top-five pick for the team that selected him since the common draft period began in 1967.
Trey Lance now has a new beginning with the
Only a small portion of the value San Francisco invested in dealing the player who was previously considered to be the franchise’s future to Dallas is expected to be recovered.
Trey Lance has a slim chance to start for the 49ers because of injury. In his first season, he broke his finger and sprained his knee; in his second season, he injured his ankle after just two games, sidelining him for the rest of the year. The current starter, Brock Purdy, was given the opportunity to take over after these failures.
Lance had a 2-2 record while playing for the 49ers, compiling 797 passing yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions.
The subject of how Lance will fit into the Cowboys’ current depth chart now that he is on a different team is raised. Dallas’ starting quarterback is still Dak Prescott, with Cooper Rush and Will Grier serving as his back-ups. Rapoport claims that Lance, who has room for improvement, will serve as the Cowboys’ third-string quarterback. Lance, who is only 23 years old, offers the Cowboys a low-risk opportunity and they continue to believe in his potential.
In addition, Lance will receive a guaranteed $6.25 million salary over the next two seasons, with a fifth-year option possible if the stars align.
